New School

Our Design Team submitted its Stage 2B Report to the Department at the end of February 2024. In October 2024, after a long delay, the Department requested additional information, which was supplied promptly the following month. Further radio silence followed until March 2025, when the Department requested the Design Team to confirm that all documentation is in order, which it did by return of email. As it stands, there does not appear to be any reason why the project cannot progress immediately to Stage 3 Tender. Although the glacial pace of the new school building project is frustrating, permission to proceed to tender is expected shortly. This process will take a minimum of 8 months. We hope to see ground broken by the summer of 2026.

Our new school, when it is completed, will be fantastic. It will be a modern, state-of-the-art 16 classroom school with a generous sports hall, a library and SEN spaces. It will incorporate 2 special classes, for which there is an urgent requirement locally. The acquisition of additional land means that there will be ample yard space and play areas. Although the wait is infuriating, it will be worth it.

The Board of Management of Scoil Mhuire is delighted to announce that we are about to make an application to Galway County Council for planning permission for our new school building. This is a hugely significant development for our school and our community. Having waited for this day for so long, we hope that you will join us and the whole school community in our happiness at this exciting news.

Our new school will be constructed directly behind the existing school, which will continue to operate as normal for the duration of the build.

Having received approval from the Department of Education and Skills for a new school building, we set about the task of planning and designing the modern, energy-efficient, well-equipped school building that our pupils and staff deserve.

We are about to embark on an important stage in the history of our school; an history that dates back to 1834. It has taken a lot of time and effort to get to this point. We are very grateful to our present and past Boards of Management, our Design Team of architects, engineers and quantity surveyors, the Planning & Building Unit of the Dept. of Education and Skills and the owners of neighbouring lands.

We invite you to view information on our new school. This will be updated as the project progresses.

The planning application will be available to view on the Galway County Council website in due course.

Go raibh maith agaibh.
